Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme (ATASP Phase 1)
The Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme Phase 1 (ATASP-1) is an initiative by the Federal Government of Nigeria, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and value chain development across the country.
In Niger State, ATASP-1 is implemented within the Bida-Badeggi Staple Crops Processing Zone (SCPZ), focusing on key agricultural value chains such as rice, cassava, and sorghum. The program’s objectives in this region include increasing food and nutrition security, creating employment opportunities, and reducing rural poverty through the development of agricultural value chains.
ATASP-1’s activities in Niger State encompass:
Infrastructure Development: Rehabilitation and construction of irrigation facilities, roads, and storage facilities to support agricultural activities.
Capacity Building: Training farmers and extension workers on modern agricultural practices to enhance productivity.
Input Provision: Supplying improved seeds, fertilizers, and other agro-inputs to farmers.
Market Linkages: Facilitating connections between farmers and markets to ensure better pricing and reduce post-harvest losses.
The program has been recognized for encouraging irrigation farming in the Bida-Badeggi Zone, contributing to increased agricultural productivity in the area.
