Agricultural and Mechanization Development Authority
The Niger State Agricultural and Mechanization Development Authority (NAMDA) plays a crucial role in improving agricultural productivity across the state, with the overarching goal of raising farmers’ incomes and enhancing their quality of life. Specific Objectives of NAMDA:
- Extension Services: To deliver agricultural extension services that empower farmers with the knowledge and skills required to increase productivity and adopt modern farming techniques.
- Strengthening Agricultural Services: To enhance the support infrastructure for farmers, improving access to essential services such as inputs, advisory support, and market linkages.
- Rural Infrastructure Development: To expand and maintain vital rural infrastructure, ensuring better access to agricultural services, markets, and transport systems.
- Commercial Services Support: To strengthen commercial services, ensuring that farmers have reliable access to quality inputs, financial support, and other essential agricultural resources.
- Policy Formulation and Capacity Building: To build the capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture in policy formulation, planning, and expenditure programming, aligning agricultural development with state priorities.
Organizational Structure:
NAMDA is divided into three operational zones, each headed by a Zonal Manager. These zones are designed to cater to the specific agricultural strengths and needs of the regions they cover:
- Zone I: A cereal-based region, well known for rice and guinea corn cultivation. The zone includes the following Local Government Areas (LGAs): Agaie, Bida, Edati, Gbako, Katcha, Lapai, Lavun, and Mokwa, with the zone’s headquarters located in Bida.
- Zone II: Specializes in yam (tuber) cultivation, with headquarters at Kuta. This zone includes Bosso, Gurara, Munya, Minna, Paikoro, Rafi, Shiroro, Suleja, and Tafa LGAs.
- Zone III: Similar to Zone I, this zone is known for cultivating cereal-based cash crops such as millet, sorghum, maize, cotton, and groundnut. The zone’s headquarters is located in Kontagora, covering Agwara, Borgu, Rijau, Mashegu, Mariga, Kontagora, Magama, and Wushishi LGAs.

- Extension Services: NAMDA provides agricultural extension services to farmers across the state, ensuring they have access to the latest agricultural techniques, technologies, and best practices.
- On-Farm Adaptive Research: NAMDA conducts on-farm adaptive research to identify practical, localized solutions to agricultural challenges, promoting innovations tailored to the specific conditions of Niger State.
- Women Development and Human Nutrition: The Authority prioritizes women’s participation in agriculture, supporting programs that enhance nutrition and empower women within farming communities.
- Livestock and Veterinary Services: NAMDA provides essential veterinary services, distributing livestock and veterinary inputs to improve animal health and productivity.
